I'm talking about writing XUL applications; there's an application front-end called xulrunner that you can use to write cross-platform applications in XUL. Firefox and Thunderbird are, as you say, just XUL applications, and hence most people think of XUL in the context of writing extensions rather than writing entire applications. But you can write your own native XUL applications and run them using xulrunner without going near Firefox or Thunderbird. (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/XULRunner) For instance, my Songbee (http://songbee.simon-cozens.org/) is run off of xulrunner. The "Mozilla platform" of XUL, JS and XPCOM, backed up by xulrunner, would be a great architecture for this sort of flashcard software.
