It is good to feel a little funny, but it is fine on a machine where you
are the only user. And on a production system you wouldn't put web sites
under a home directory (as a rule).

Do "su -", then do "su - www-data".

P.S. You could change it to 770 and put the apache user in the "dave"
group. But that is wasted effort in this case IMHO.
