Thanks for responding.I also tried :Try becoming the user apache runs as, e.g. "www":
This can't be good:
dave@example.com:~$ su - www
Unknown id: www
chmod o+r /home/dave/
chmod o+r /home/dave/web_sites/
... and restarted apache for good measure.
Still, "403 Forbidden".
