Now, in this case, I wonder if it's connected with the fact that the
user with sudo has a different $PATH.  It's harder to check in a distro
like Ubuntu--if it were, for example, Slack, I'd say, well log in as
root, startx and see what happens.

Another temporary change you could try is the permissions on whatever it
is in /dev.  I'm stabbing in the dark here, because I'm not familiar
with the O/S.  Hopefully, somone with knowledge will tell you what to
change.  It might be that you should have been made part of the scanner
group and that somehow got changed.  

My guess is that there is either a file similar to FreeBSD's
/etc/devfs.conf where you can set the permissions on the device, or that
there is a group--for example, in ArchLinux, you have to add yourself to
the audio group to use sound.

I suspect that it does.  Hopefully, an Ubuntu user will fill in the
blanks here.
