No takers, apparently. I would like to try out ATOK, but when I asked Just Systems if it would work on openSUSE 10.2, their reply simply repeated what is on their Web site, which is for "SUSE 10.0". It seems they do not offer a trial version but insist on your money up front without being able to guarantee that you will be able to use it.

Well, I gave in and ordered ATOK anyway, I've just installed it on a couple of systems, we're running Centos 4 here, so following the instructions on the Just Systems site for RHEL 4 managed to get it installed. I'm not sure how different SUSE 10.2 is to 10.0, the install is RPM based, so if the install script does not work you could probably fudge it manually.

ATOK seems to work fine for me, but since I don't use/read Japanese
very well I cant really tell if it's any better than Anthy.

I'm sure I'll be getting feedback pretty soon from the users in here
so if anyone's interested I'll post updates as I get them.

With SCIM+Anthy, by the way, you can enable prediction in the SCIM Input Method Setup dialog under the right-most tab (put a check by "Show predicted candidates while inputting letters" or 文字入力中に予測候補を表示する). Since there is no prediction dictionary as in PRIME, it won't do much until you've used it for a while to accumulate data.

I tried to explain to the users that over time it should remember frequently used characters/words, unfortunately patience vs. time was a loosing battle so we had to go the commercial route, fingers crossed ATOK proves to be 'better' than SCIM.
