How's this for a student machine. IBM Think Pad S30i P3 600 256MB RAM.

Under Gnome OOo2 Writer launched a blank  doc in 32 seconds the first time
and 13 the second.

My old P-III 450MHz, 384MB Dell OptiPlex cost me Y2,000 (no missing zero there folks) - which I'm quite certain is well within the budget of 100% of all students in Japan.  Yes, the speed is not blazing - 25 seconds to open 1.1.4 (I haven't updated OpnOf to 2.0 yet), but once it's open it works fine.

What is this obsession with opening speed anyway?  Don't people spent vastly more time working with open programs than in opening and closing them?  If you need to go through one file after another - opening and closing them, then just close the file while leaving the OpnOf shell open.  Then things are speedy enough!  If they're not, then where are the flames for Adobe Acrobat, Visio (now *that's* a slow starter!!), etc?

As for cost.  Is someone seriously suggesting that Brand-W is cheaper than Linux?  I find that very amusing!  Amusing and disgusting!!  If I ever meet Bill Gate$, I just want to say "Give me my money back!".  MicroMuck cheaper than Linux?  ha-ha-ha.... Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha.... HA!-HA!!-HA!!-HA!!HAHAHA!!!!
