What is the current legal status of DVD software in Japan?

 

Is it legal to run DVD software under linux, such as using VLC media player to play DVD's?

 

I know there is a big controversy over their legal status in the US, but I am not currently in the US, nor am I likely to be for any extended period of time in the near future. ^^;
