Do you havbe a VIA chipset in your machine? There *were* serious issues
with those and Linux a while ago. Apparently the USB controllers were
buggy as hell but the proprietary Windows drivers worked around the
bugs. Linux drivers, OTOH, expected the controller to conform to
specifications, with disappointing results...
