The card vendors have, under extreme pressure from Apple and Microsoft. Apple users also generally use Apple-supplied, or at least -approved, hardware. That makes a really big difference. Also note that a graphics card is far and away the most complicated peripheral that a desktop user ever encounters, and far more complicated than the other two realtime peripherals (audio and mouse).
