Why do you consider this laziness? I consider this one of the
things I absolutely hate about X. I see tons of effort being into just
auto-detecting many other devices (USB, Firewire, mice, ethernet cards)
on bootup. I don't see why a graphics card has to be a special case where
you tweak the x<insert version du jour>.conf file to death until you finally
get it running. MacOS and Windows have been doing a pretty decent job
I think in this case from a user standpoint for years.
I see many distributions that aim for the desktop also put incredible
amounts of effort to get this to 'just work' on install as well. I
understand there will be devices that won't 'just work' and in
this case it will require tweaking until the correct parameters are found
but imo this should be a corner case rather than the defaults. I really
appreciate 'X -configure' being available (and doing a pretty darned good
job) in the Xorg releases. It really has taken a lot of the drudgery of
having to stare at a command prompt for hours while trying to remember
that I forgot to include option-tucked-far-far-away in manpage that
finally enables X11 to launch.

Amen.
