Note I'm not saying that there should be no public threads, just that
summaries, whether of an off-list poll or of an on-list thread, are
good things to have.

It's an excuse for off-topic stuff (practice :-).  The real benefit
comes from organizing them into FAQs (typically nothing more than a
summary) and HOWTOs (which often grow out of several summaries of
related threads).
