TLUG,

Made some progress. Found a bug report that referenced the error output 
I mentioned before. It said to comment out a reference to 
.asoundrc.asoundconf in a file called .asoundrc. So I did that, and it 
removed the error output, and also allowed me to start 
gnome-sound-recorder. The bug report is here:

However, I'm still not getting microphone input, so does the output 
below reveal anything? Again, I've made sure to un-mute the microphone 
channels.
