You may need to take to the command line. Try the following command,
and please paste all its output (which will be 100 lines or so, I
hope) into a reply to this email:

amixer

(You should not need to be root to run this command, but if you get
any "permission denied"-type errors, just prepend a "sudo " to the
command and try again.)
