Try:

kinput2 -canna -xim &

Does that make any difference in Thunderbird? You will need to launch
Thunderbird with an environment something like this:

XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput2 LANGUAGE=en_US LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.eucJP thunderbird
