This is bad. A reboot should take you to a known state. If you were
expecting the resolution you configured with a desktop, you should get
that. If you then reboot and things change again from what you
actually saw, I have to think you're slowly wiping out your installation.

If you log in as root or use sudo, you should be able to get a
directory listing of /var/log. Look for something starting with X,
the tail of that will probably have useful information. Also try the
dmesg command.

You could do that, but I recommend you look at the logs and see what
they say first.
