You can do "real" furigana (here called "Ruby text") too:
enable it in Format -> Page -> Text Grid.
Are these features also available in the English version, or is this
specific to the Japanese version? I ask because I fell flat on my face in
my previous job when I tried to persuade several Japanese coworkers to try
OpenOffice, only to find that the Japanese features were terrible...
really terrible.

However, that was at least two years ago, if not more, and OpenOffice was
not ripe yet.

More to the point, can I get full Japanese capabilities in the English
version?

Well, try it out! When I began using the previous (and ongoing
commercial) version StarOffice 5.1/5.2, it was nearly impossible to even
input Japanese text. With each version, local language support has
gotten better and better (and I hear that StarOffice has a lot more
fonts). That said, if people are expecting it to be a carbon copy of
bloody MS-Office, they're making a fundamental mistake I think. Once
weaned of illegal MS-Junk though, they should be happy with it. Or...
maybe the best thing is to have them phase it in gradually, using it
(alongside MS-Word) for regular text functions first, and then working
into the features is has.
