Too bad for him.  :-(  But he'll have Xorg by 2015 or so, since it's
in Debian sid now.  ;-)

The X servers do understand that protocol, I'm pretty sure.  For
XFree86 there was a "magic mode" for notebooks that basically said
"ask the hardware."  You may need digital video output for that, though.
