[tlug] Fedora 4/Emacs font trouble

Hi All
almost given up on this

When I run
    Emacs in xterm (emacs -nw ) , no font/display
trouble
 but   when I run 
    emacs &

The Window becomes unreadable ...can see about 50%

I also switch from Gnome to Kde...same problems

anyone had trouble with Fedora 4/Emacs ?
This is bugging the hell out of me
