[tlug] emacs build for 21.3 does not work with X (for me!)

I did a build of emacs to get the better unicode support in 21.3, but I 
cannot get it to run in X. Works fine in an xterm.

On my stock RH8, I downloaded the tarball into /usr/share/emacs/ unpacked 
and ran the standard  ./config, make, make install. I have also tried 
re-installing as ./config -with-x and moving the binary to /usr/bin instead 
of the default usr/local/bin, but still when I start it from an X (Gnome) 
launcher, nothing happens.

I am sure its something fundamental that I just do not know about, so, with 
apologies-- help! Thanks.
