Late to the party -- sorry for that. > knoppix does not do Japanese right out of the box. > > Knoppix does have a Japanese edition: http://unit.aist.go.jp/it/knoppix/ You just download it, burn it onto a CD, pop it into your CD drive and boot up. The beauty of Knoppix is that it has pretty good hardware auto-detection, although it may sometimes fail to pick up some of the less usual devices. The English edition should be able to do Japanese straight out of the box as well, although I haven't tried it yet and the Japanese edition may be the safer bet anyway. The distro comes with the latest version of KDE, which has a "Control Center" that lets you pick interface languages. Knoppix also has a very easy installer that allows you to install the system on your hard disk, either as a straight install or a dual boot in case you wish to hang on to a Windows install on the same box, for example. If you install it on your hard disk, it basically becomes Debian. Rudolf
