Wow...so many replies! And it is beginning to make sense and become less a thing of mystique and intrigue Thanks to: 1)Scott and his http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/jpninpt.html Also, 2)Shawn 3)David (Norway? I lived for a year in Denmark in '75) and also worked on a farm in Bro/ttum, Norway). 4)Matthias 5)Stephen 6)Jonathan Byrne and a few people who wrote off the list, plus David Nettles from suse-linux-ja@example.com!!!! One thing I found is that instructions that I THOUGHT were difficult, were not. I just didn't understand that, for example, "X" simply means the desktop. I though it was something in the TERMINAL. And I discovered that terminal neededn't be so scarey. In pre-Mac days, on my Apple II as a member of TWICS, I had to use Telnet and Pine. It seems that is basically also TERMINAL, right? Another thing I found is that some of my mouse problems disappeared when I disconnnected one of the video outputs from my computer to the monitor (IO Data 19inch combination TV and monitor). It seems it is not good to have both connected. Luckily the drivers for that were installed into the display itself when it was hooked up to Windpows...well, at least it functions as a TV with the right channels programmed as a result of that. The pizza and beer route seems good. Not sure about adding girlfriend at this time. The benefits outwiegh the complications! Found I have a linuux guru right here at work!! One thing....Stephen says in answer to my question.... paul> (4) Can I just put a CD or DVD of any good installation and paul> write over it? Stephen> No, because you'll have different hardware etc. Fix the installation you've got, or find someone to fix it for you. Ok.....because of time constraints (I was suppposed to be updating my own website and creating a P-machine website for some of my students) and the fact that I am going to be in the U.S. for 4 weeks, I have decided to leave the thing in English for now and come back to it in April. The notes here will be immensely helpful. But just for the sake of knowledge---if I were to get redhat (called fedora now?) as someone mentioned, and DID stick it in the drive and said INSTALL, would it? Also, a friend says he got Knopppix on CD and he thinks it works in Japanese, albeit in its slow mode (not installed). if so, that may be all I need for the occasional use I have. But you all have encouraged me to get this fixed and not to give up. (and if there is nothing equivalent to Yast in other distributions, it seems like I SHOULD stay with Suse for now). By the way, for what it is worth...the system I reinstalled in Japanese last night gave me this data, after entering the text Jonathan mentioned. I am not sure how useful it will be as i won't be able to work on this until April, but for the record here it , and I am curious if there is some surpirse there that would be enlighteneing. arenson@example.com:~> printenv LESSKEY=/etc/lesskey.bin NNTPSERVER=news INFODIR=/usr/local/info:/usr/share/info:/usr/info MANPATH=/usr/local/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/opt/gnome/man KDE_MULTIHEAD=false HOSTNAME=usen-221x242x10x37 XKEYSYMDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB HOST= TERM=xterm SHELL=/bin/bash PROFILEREAD=true HISTSIZE=1000 XDM_MANAGED=/var/run/xdmctl/xdmctl-:0,maysd,mayfn,sched,rsvd STYLE=Keramik GTK2_RC_FILES=/etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:/opt/gnome/share/themes/Geramik/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:/home/arenson/.gtkrc-2.0-Keramik:/home/arenson/.kde/share/config/gtkrc GTK_RC_FILES=/etc/opt/gnome/gtk/gtkrc:/opt/gnome/share/themes/Geramik/gtk/gtkrc:/home/arenson/.gtkrc-Keramik:/home/arenson/.kde/share/config/gtkrc KDEHOME=/home/arenson/.kde XSESSION_IS_UP=yes KDE_FULL_SESSION=true JRE_HOME=/usr/lib/java/jre USER=arenson LS_COLORS=no=00:fi=00:di=01;34:ln=00;36:pi=40;33:so=01;35:do=01;35:bd=40;33;01:cd=40;33;01:or=40;31:ex=00;32:*.cmd=01;32:*.exe=01;32:*.com=01;32:*.bat=01;32:*.btm=01;32:*.dll=01;32:*.tar=00;31:*.tbz=00;31:*.tgz=00;31:*.rpm=00;31:*.deb=00;31:*.arj=00;31:*.taz=00;31:*.lzh=00;31:*.zip=00;31:*.zoo=00;31:*.z=00;31:*.Z=00;31:*.gz=00;31:*.bz2=00;31:*.tb2=00;31:*.tz2=00;31:*.tbz2=00;31:*.avi=01;35:*.bmp=01;35:*.fli=01;35:*.gif=01;35:*.jpg=01;35:*.jpeg=01;35:*.mng=01;35:*.mov=01;35:*.mpg=01;35:*.pcx=01;35:*.pbm=01;35:*.pgm=01;35:*.png=01;35:*.ppm=01;35:*.tga=01;35:*.tif=01;35:*.xbm=01;35:*.xpm=01;35:*.dl=01;35:*.gl=01;35:*.aiff=00;32:*.au=00;32:*.mid=00;32:*.mp3=00;32:*.ogg=00;32:*.voc=00;32:*.wav=00;32: OPENWINHOME=/usr/openwin XNLSPATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/nls HOSTTYPE=i386 SESSION_MANAGER=local/usen-221x242x10x37:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2593 PAGER=less LD_HWCAP_MASK=0x20000000 KONSOLE_DCOP=DCOPRef(konsole-2762,konsole) MINICOM=-c on PATH=/home/arenson/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/java/jre/bin CPU=i686 JAVA_BINDIR=/usr/lib/java/jre/bin KDM_AUTOLOGIN=arenson KONSOLE_DCOP_SESSION=DCOPRef(konsole-2762,session-1) INPUTRC=/etc/inputrc PWD=/home/arenson XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput2 JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/java/jre LANG=ja_JP TEXINPUTS=::/home/arenson/.TeX:/usr/share/doc/.TeX:/usr/doc/.TeX:/home/arenson/.TeX:/usr/share/doc/.TeX:/usr/doc/.TeX SHLVL=2 HOME=/home/arenson LESS_ADVANCED_PREPROCESSOR=no OSTYPE=linux LS_OPTIONS=-N --color=tty -T 0 no_proxy=localhost XCURSOR_THEME=blueprint-cursor-theme WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/kde LESS=-M -I MACHTYPE=i686-suse-linux LOGNAME=arenson PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/gnome/lib/pkgconfig LESSOPEN=lessopen.sh %s USE_FAM= ACLOCAL_PATH=/opt/gnome/share/aclocal INFOPATH=/usr/local/info:/usr/share/info:/usr/info DISPLAY=:0.0 LESSCLOSE=lessclose.sh %s %s G_BROKEN_FILENAMES=1 JAVA_ROOT=/usr/lib/java COLORTERM= _=/usr/bin/printenv arenson@example.com:~> arenson@example.com:~> ps aux |grep -i canna wnn 1892 0.0 0.0 2096 1024 ?
