Well, I have been stumped by the problem of no Kanji input. I was asked to cut and paste, and noted I could not cut and paste a dialogue box message. I went back and reviewed some old messages from here and other places, but it seems they might apply to running Linux installed in English. I did a Japanese install and have the same problem. At least one user here, Lyle, has tried both and in Japanese, seems to be ok with Kanji input. What I HAVE found, is that I can pop in a Knoppix Japanese disk CD and get Japanese with it. So it SEEMS my computer is not incapable.... Dr. Fabian sent me something, but it seems related to ENGLISH systems..... so I will wait on that.... Others here have sent suggestions too, but again, seem to be related to English installations to whch I want to add Kanji. -------------------------------------------------------------- Just NOW I found this on the net! THIS SEEMS TO BE EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM http://lists.suse.com/archive/m17n/2002-Dec/0008.html "From: ugroh@example.com (Ulrich Groh) Date: Sun, 29 Dec 2002 11:24:50 +0100 Message-Id: <200212291124.50430.ugroh@example.com> Subject: [m17n] Canna Server I am running SuSE 8.1. and have the following problem with the canna server: 1. In xemacs I can't use japanese-canna . I always get the message "... Kanji server can't be used" in japanese. I can enter Hiragana but not Kanji. 2. The canna server is running. I stoped and restarted it with the /etc/init.d/canna command. 3. If I use cannstat or cshost I always get the message "Error Disconnected" 4. In my /etc/hosts.canna file I have localhost and unix as entry. How can I find out what I am missing? " ------------------------------------------------- This message suggests there is a subset of people who have troubles with Kanji but not Kana........ Unfortunately, I did not find a response to him. I wonder if he bought his computer in TWO TOP???? (Joke). Meanwhile....THIS suggestion from someone (refelecting what some others have said) seems worth trying, but I get the feeling it is for English systems. Please try the following: 1. Open konsole 2. Type "kinput2 -canna -xim &" and hit return 3. Type "XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput" and hit return 4. Type "export XMODIFIERS" and hit return 5. Type "LC_CTYPE=ja_JP LANG=en_US kterm -xim &" and hit return This assumes that kinput2 and kterm (Kanji Terminal) are installed. When kterm shows up, you should be able to enter Kanji mode with Shift+Space (or Control-O? I don't know if the defaults are different on SuSE). You may also want to look for im-ja, which is a japanese IME for GTK2, much nicer than kinput2/XIM, but it will only work with GTK2 apps. ------------------------------------ But I think again, the message worth checking out is the one from the user in Germany. http://lists.suse.com/archive/m17n/2002-Dec/0008.html paul
