False.  The reason for suggesting a Canna-ized application is to get
kinput2 and XIM out of the way.

BTW, I don't know how to determine if a vi-family app is canna-ized.
AFAIK it's a separate patch, so your distro probably has a vim-canna
package.  Eg,

so it looks like vanilla vim doesn't do Canna in Debian.

In the long run I think the IIIMF protocol for IMs is much better, and
eventually XFree86 will probably support it or another improved IM
protocol natively even if it's not X11 standard.  (Sorry, since the
book got published I've become lazy about actually trying things,
since XEmacs works so well for my style.)
