I had to set a number of configuration commands for MEW in the ~/.emacs file. The instructions on their FAQ say to put these in the ~/mew.el file, but that didn't work. Just to try anything, I put the instructions in .emacs, and then MEW copied them to ~/mew.el. I had no idea that there were so many different mail packages that one could use.
