[tlug] mySQL installation problems

I downloaded mysql-3.23.49a-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz and tried to install it 
but I get this error when I try to start it:

>bin/safe_mysql
Starting mysql daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
020604 13:13:55 mysql ended

A look at the log file gives:

020604 13:13:55 mysql started
020604 13:13:55 Can't start server : Bind on Unix socket: Permission denied
020604 13:13:55 Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: 
/tmp/mysql.sock ?
020604 13:13:55 Aborting
020604 13:13:55 /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld: Shutdown Complete
020604 13:13:55 mysql ended

I checked and there is no mysql server already running. I also checked the 
permissions on mysql and they seem ok too. (I set them acording to the 
instruction given in the INSTALL file).

My RH7.2 is a pretty minimal installation (many rpms not included) so I 
might be missing something that mysql needs?
