As you (IIRC) put it later in the thread, most people use Word as a glorified typewriter. People who need portability beyond print-and-OCR or interoperability beyond Office are already using Docbook and other SGML/XML-based standards, and CORBA. Word is really for making nice one-offs, like your resume, but really it's not acceptable beyond that. Micheal> An open XML standard could be created to handle that, but Micheal> the accountants of the software companies would never let Micheal> it happen, I guess. And with good reason. They'd be out Micheal> of a job. This is probably false. Half would lose their jobs, and half would be rich beyond their wildest dreams. Given how wild the dreams of accountants are, it's not surprising they don't consider the upside worth risking the downside. However, that doesn't really matter. There's no way they can stop it if it's a good idea. And that's what _I_ like about Open Source. -- Institute of Policy and Planning Sciences http://turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp University of Tsukuba Tennodai 1-1-1 Tsukuba 305-8573 JAPAN Don't ask how you can "do" free software business; ask what your business can "do for" free software.
