For anyone needing a small linux distribution, or for those folks who like NetBSD but want a Linux kernel, I've found that CRUX is a well maintained, closer to the edge distro. While this distro is not intended for newbies, the installation documentation is good enough for the more experienced newbies to cut their teeth on.
