Good idea but I don:t know how to check for that ;) And considering all the 
machines on the LAN are 98 ...

Nope, I'm assuming this is because they are on different subnets. I have 
only really tried to ping .1-5 and .250-4 and 99-101. The WinMe ping is so 
slow that I don't want to ping too many addresses.

My mistake. If I hard set the IP I *can* ping the other machines.

No to all three.

Yes.

Luckily the TA here has a web interface believe it or not! From that I was 
able to get the DNS addresses and hard code those in,@example.com with a static 
ip and the default gateway (the TA).

But that still leave me wondering when DHCP is on it gets such a weird 
address as 169.254.1.173

Anyway, that will teach me to try and help people who run Windows.
