Actually I _did_ download modules-2.1.13. But I guess that this package,
although still downloadable  from ftp.kernel.org, is obsolete, so I gave
up on the attempt to install modules-2.1.13.

Instead I upgraded/re-installed the kernel ( linux-2.2.18) and
modutils-2.1.121 and finally pcmcia-cs-3.1.23.
The last (pcmcia) did solve the problem:
now I can simply insert the CompactFlash Memory Card and mount
it by   mount -t vfat /dev/hde1 /mnt/nikon

what happened to the tradition that the even numbers are always stable
and the odd numbers are more adventurous?
IMHO it is unnecssarily confusing that there is some unstable
kernel out in the wild under the version number 2.4.*

Well actually there was no trouble compiling the kernel.
In contrast, there was some difficulty in compiling the pcmcia
package, because the the ./Configure script of this script
called

   man -cw ls

in order to determine where to put the manpages. On my system
(SuSe 5.1., kernel now 2.2.18) the man command does not understand
the combination of options and returns an error message. The ./Configure
did not realize that something went wrong and happily inserted this
error message instead of the manpath in to the files to be configured.
Naturally, this caused havoc.
