Yeah, this is something completely different; you should be able to
switch to a different VC and work there, it's the X server that's
compute bound here (not multi-threaded :-( ).

As a workaround, you could try using Imagemagick instead of xv.  If
you must use xv, you could try running it under gdb.  Sorry I can't be
of more help.
