In the 舌皛逅跂勉闕辞典 and 広辞苑, unfortunately, although 糸 is
written middle, left, right, in 組 the itohen is given as a whole,
then the rest stroke by stroke.

Note that for 糸 they also do it middle, left, right.  So I can't give
you a reliable statement, but I suspect that in combinations the
simpler form is either allowed or even preferred.

I could ask my 6th grade daughter.  I'm sure she knows. :-)
