I wonder if you could be referring to ものの哀れ ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_no_aware > Many of the Japanese films seem this way to me. The classics that pop > to mind are Kurasawa's "7 Samurai" and Ozu's "Late Spring" and "Tokyo > Story" Even comedies like Ramen tend to end on a sad note. I think it's well-established that the Japanese prefer (in their literature and arts at least) to focus on the "sad" side of things, unlike most Westerners, and very much unlike Americans... Dave
