A couple things:

* is kinput2 already running?
* don't you need to specify a kanji mode with "-km"?
* does your kterm app-defaults contain this:

  kterm*VT100.translations: #override \
        Shift<Key>space:        begin-conversion(_JAPANESE_CONVERSION)
