WindowMaker (http://www.windowmaker.org) is indeed a window manager.  It
looks a _lot_ like the old NeXT (or however that's capitalized)
environment.  It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as E does -- but
it is much leaner (read: not as much of a pig as E), very easy to
configure, and integrates well with GNOME.
