tlug: disk fragmentation

今日は皆さん、

how is disk fragmentation handled in UNIX systems? On Microsoft
Windows there are all sorts of defragmentation tools, many of them are
very annoying. When I was last irritated by such a tool I wondered why
one doesn't have to mess around with something like that on a UNIX
system. It seems that it is somehow not needed for UNIX. When I check
a Linux file system I see something like:

/dev/hdb3: 2091/265200 files (5.7% non-contiguous), 649553/1060290 blocks

the non-contiguous percentage is never very high and never seems to
rise significantly. Does that mean that UNIX systems do the
defragmentation automatically?
