     Talk: Linux i18n/Japanization

                  All Open Source Groups Welcome
                  ------------------------------
All Linux users and supporters of open source code and free software
are invited to attend the October 10th Tokyo Linux Users Group meeting.
Membership is open to anyone. There are no membership dues or entrance
fees.

About TLUG
----------
TLUG is a non-profit, non-political organization established in June
of 1994 to exchange information on the use of Linux and Free Software
Foundation tools. TLUG has an active mailing list, home page, and
regular physical meetings. Discussions are primarily held in English,
but non-English speakers are encouraged to come and participate.
We especially want to encourage Japanese people to attend and will make
efforts to support a bilingual meeting.

TLUG hosts technical meetings every even month on the 2nd Saturday, and
nomikai's every odd month on the 3rd Friday.

The TLUG home page is available at http://tlug.linux.or.jp

Technical Meeting Topic
-----------------------
Stephen Turnbull (Tsukuba University) and Scott Stone (PHT) will be
talking about Linux internationalization/japanization. What it takes
to add Japanese support into Linux and make it "understand" Japanese?
As Stephen wrote in a recent thread in our mailing list:

    about web-serverving in Japanese:
"Japanese word-processing and so on is the EASY part of Japanese
support. Install Mule or jvim, Canna, and YOW! you're Japanese
content-capable. But forget serving Japanese forms and CGI scripts
that easily. It's all the little things---a grep that knows kanji,
ditto Perl, less, sh, etc, utilities for guessing kanji codes---that
will save your temper while you're administering a host that serves
     Japanese."

about Japanese in a Linux GUI:
"The GUI must have special support to display its own messages in
Japanese; if you want your popup menu to list you favorite apps like
kterm, xv, and Mule in katakana, the GUI must be Japanized. However,
kterm runs very happily and displays kanji on top of plain X windows
or any English-only window manager you care to use---as long as the
kanji fonts for X are installed."

These and other issues will be covered by Stephen and Scott, and if you
have any questions, bring them to the meeting.

Meeting Place
-------------
(map at http://www.tuj.ac.jp/maps.html)

The Temple University Japan (TUJ) Campus is located at 'San no Hashi'
(the street name is 'Sakurada Dori'). The DHC building across the street
has a HUGE four sided sign that says DHC. The 06 bus from Shibuya stops
at Furukawa-bashi, which is a one block walk away from TUJ. TUJ is in a
single big building with a sign out front, right on Sakurada Dori.

Cab drivers will take you right there if you ask for San no Hashi. It is a
15 minute walk from Tamachi, but while it is pretty straight forward, it
needs a map, as there are a couple of jogs in the route.

The 96 bus also stops there, and I think the 92 bus as well. It is a 20
minute walk from Hiro (Just go to Tengen-ji Bashi intersection and head
toward Azabu Ju-ban on Meijidori), or a minimum price cab ride from either
Hiro or Tamachi

If you are coming to the meeting, join the mailing list by sending e-mail
to majordomo@example.com including
