Is there a reason I > shouldn't do this? > well, the distinction is a historical one. sort of. basically, /usr is for stuff that's part of the core OS, ie, when you install TurboLinux, it doesn't put any files in /usr/local, since a distribution shouldnt do that. /usr/local is for stuff that you go out and download and install yourself - ie, third party stuff that's not packaged by us (or any other distribution vendor).
