More newbie questions and babble. As it may be of benefit to other, I would like to first mention that I was able to solve, with the assistance of a half dozen people, my first problem, i.e. the Cirrus Logic videocard CLGD7548 which was not being able to run Xwindows. That's on the Sharp Mebius PCA455. Looks like Libretto has the same video card. I will be happy to send the XF86Config file to interested parties. * Many thanks to Jonathan, Howard and David. Thanks to your advice I have been able to progress right along to the next _PPP _Stumbling _Block ...PSB-2 (suggestion to developers: the company that develops a comprehensive configuration system for connecting to a dial-up provider should be able to sell quite a few widgets; this is getting frustrating!). after setting USERCTL to USERCTL=yes, I got the error that 'pppd does not exist', which was a surprise as I assumed that it would have been installed when TL2.0J Standard was; guess not. A search through the TL partition revealed that in fact no files containing the string 'pppd' did exist. The only CD that I have at my disposal now is TL2.0J - *Lite* which happily included the file 'ppp-2.3.5-1.i386.rpm'. I copied it to the directory one step above root and installed it with the command 'rpm -i ppp-2.3.5-1.i386.rpm' . This is actually the first UNIX app that I have installed on my own; hope that the method isn't faulty. Anyway, the pppd seems to have been installed; I know this because the modem started making clicking sounds and the modem icon changed its red lights to green lights. Excitedly I plugged a telephone line into the modem and hey, it even seemed to be dialing the correct number. However - and here's the stumbling block - after dialing GOL (the provider) the modem just clicked off again (modem icon lights turned red) and then started up again, the process repeating itself over and over. I found that the system starts the PPP process at bootup, by the way. This presents two problems, I guess: 1) how to actually connect to the provider and -gasp- actually use the connection for web browsing and mail exchange. (judging from other pleas for help on tlug, I expect there will be a couple more stumbling blocks again). 2) how to stop the system from starting up PPP at bootup and keep it from trying to connect incessantly. As for problem #1, I'm still pretty clueless. To solve problem #2, I tried setting ONBOOT to ONBOOT=no (had tried that on 'yes' previously) and, in the neworking configuration gui, unclicked 'maintain PPP connection after it is lost' which I assume is setting PERSIST to PERSIST=no. This didn't remedy the situation so I removed ppp0 settings (so that I could think in quiet). Which is what I am doing now... Am I getting warm?
