tlug: One step forwared, one step back.

With everyone's help and my own digging around, i finally figured out a lot
about my POP mail server thingy. It turns out that it's DPOP, and it's from
a company called NetWin (netwinsite.com). I had to e-mail in a registration
to get a key which basically got it running again. So now it's there and
it's behaving better than it was before. By using a command called
"tellpop" with different perameters, i can interface with this thing a bit
and get it to do stuff.
However, after testing this thing a bit, i've gotten a bit lost again, and
that's why i'm here.
Way, way before, when i was first trying to get this whole e-mail thing to
go, i sent an e-mail to test@example.com, and then by telnet'ing in and
using pine, i could see the e-mail that had gotten there. Now, after having
gotten the DPOP thingy up and running i can no longer do this. When i send
an e-mail TO test@example.com (by using Eudora from my NT machine) i get no
errors and it disappears. When i log into test's account and use pine,
there is nothing in the in-box.
The other end of the stick is that when i e-mail FROM test@example.com
(again, from my Eudora on my NT machine), it gives me an error, saying
"connection refused". I checked my mail immediately, and nothing had
arrived. But then, an hour or so later, when I checked my mail from eudora
(using my rainbow.co.jp account) the message did arrive after all.
Then i tried to send FROM test@example.com using pine when logged in as
test, and it said "can't access /usr/sbin/sendmail : permission denied".

This is all very confusing for me to even try to explain. Thusly, i'm kind
of thrashing around. If someone can just calm me down, i'd be grateful.
I keep seeing this "permission denied" thing cropping up in different
places. So i went to the NetWin site, and i've come across a section on
authentication. It says:
"First the client must use a valid username. This is limited by a wildcard
list of valid names in the configuration file."
What does it mean by "a wildcard list"?
