Dear Michael,

Have a look in sendmail sources under cf/README, and search for
"resolv".  There's a feature called
"accept_unresolvable_addresses" or something like that which
might loosen things up enough for things to work for you.  The
reason for insisting on resolution is to try to discourage
spoofers and spammers, but the marginal loss of Internet
discipline from loosening that up on a single machine is pretty
small, so I wouldn't worry about it.
