Linux does this, too, btw.  from /etc/nsswitch.conf:

hosts:      files nisplus nis dns


Solaris/X86 gives you the choice of 'NIS, NIS+, or Other' in the
installation.  You have to manually hack /etc/nsswitch.conf to use DNS.
