I figure that this might not be an awfully helpful comment
for you at the moment, but your current problems are one of
the reason why I switched to TurboLinux:  You can get it
with Japanese support pre-configured.

Now you have just to try to install one package after the
other and when you hit some dependencies that are not
satisfied, go after these packages also.  Otherwise, you may
try installing from source, but then you need to have the
development versions of all the needed libraries installed.
