Yep to both questions.  Which adapter depends on which standard you get.  You'll 
lose the improved SCSI bus speed though.  But the improved seek time of newer 
drives would probably still make a lot of difference.

The drives I worked on last year have a 186 chip as the controller, so your
still a little bit ahead...  :)
