Hint: try "rgb". Actually, this was happening when I created new images. Choosing RGB gave it a color depth of 16 without asking me whether that's what I wanted or not. >If you're happy with your other software, why are you forcing yourself >to use gimp (without reading the documentation)? Partly because I'm lazy and don't want to shut down my system and all of my other apps and reboot into Windows just to do that. I do everything else at work under Linux now and usually only boot Windows if I need to do some graphics editing or somebody gives me an MS Office document they need translated or something. And once in a while during support calls from Windows users. It's also partly just for the challenge of it, to learn to use GIMP a bit. I think GIMP at least has enough potential that I want to learn more about it, but two things I really wish they would do are make it Japanese-capable, and fix it so that there was a tool bar in each image window instead of just one floating free by itself. The amount of time I can spend in Linux now makes me wish that it could run Win32 apps, and that there was a nice, easy editing tool for the lookup dictionaries of the kanji servers (Mac and Windows blow us away on this one). It takes a bit of jigging and dancing to get "Jonathan" into katakana in Jpine :-) Cheers, Jonathan Byrne Media and Content Section 3Web - Your Internet Solution! <URL:http://www.threeweb.ad.jp/index.en.html> 3Web Channel <URL: http://www.3web.co.jp/> -------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 17 July, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Meeting: 8 August, Tokyo Station Yaesu central gate 12:30 featuring Linux on multiple platforms: i386, Sparc, PA-Risc, Amiga, SGI, Alpha, PalmPilot, ... -------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor: PHT, makers of TurboLinux http://www.pht.co.jp
