Huh. I don't have any trouble with the man page (GIMP 1.0, built from
SRPM). I wish I had a clue what the problem is.

You probably know this, but the GIMP User's Manual (in PostScript or
PDF) will tell you much more about everything than the man page. You
should be able to find it at any GIMP archive site.
