I had to rebuild the kernel for other reasons, but it also happened to
get AWE 32 Gold working.  I don't know whether it uses any AWEsome
features, but at least I can understand what the RSI-impaired folks on
a couple of my MLs are (literally ;-) saying.  cthugha works, too.
More or less Debian 1.3 distribution, kernel is stock 2.0.33 sources,
modularized the sound.

I seem to recall that I had to build the modules twice, as the
Makefile dependencies were hosed so that a symbol table failed to get
built properly.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have my .config anymore, but here's
/etc/soundconf, FWIW (I have no idea whether these actually make
sense):
