Well, you're supposed to be able to use a filter to convert the
printer to PS enabled like this *imaginary* /etc/printcap:

# HP DeskJet 560J (Text)
#Set Default Printer
lp|inkjet: \
        :lp=/dev/lp1: \
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp: \
        :if=/usr/local/bin/lpfilter: \
        :mx#0: \
        :sh

# HP DeskJet 560J (Postscript)
psjet|postscript_inkjet: \
        :lp=/dev/lp1: \
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/psjet: \
        :if=/usr/local/bin/psjetfilter: \
        :mx#0: \
        :sh

and there was a whole set of psjetfilters, but... well, I gave
up over a year ago trying to get the 560J to do much of
anything...

Yep, same problem. I've always thought that it had something in
common with the printer always printing a Yen sign where a \
should be (even in staight ASCII printing.)

No, it's a reasonable assumption that may turn out to be
correct;-)
