gpm wouldn't affect it.  /dev/mouse certainly could, though.  What's it
set to, and what type of mouse do you have?

the kernel would have nothing to do with it UNLESS your kernel doesn't
support /dev/psaux and you have a ps/2 mouse (do you?)

I'll leave this one to Steve.  He seems to be the resident Debian guru
around here.  Or at least its most vocal advocate :)
