Assuming you want a GUI, you should check whether there is X Windows
support for your video card and monitor. Fortunately there isn't much
hardware these days that is completely unsupported, but some people
find it necessary to buy commercial X servers.

The XFree86 project has a list of all the video cards supported by
their free X distribution. You might want to look at it before you
take the plunge. It's at
