Hi, Gavin-- > So, I'm a complete Linux novice who's about to install my first Linux > system. My machine is an old Compaq Pentium 100 with 40Mb of RAM, 1Gb > hard disk and a CDROM. > Basic question: Am I in for a world of pain, or will the task be easy? > Any pre-install hints would be much appreciated. Assuming you want a GUI, you should check whether there is X Windows support for your video card and monitor. Fortunately there isn't much hardware these days that is completely unsupported, but some people find it necessary to buy commercial X servers. The XFree86 project has a list of all the video cards supported by their free X distribution. You might want to look at it before you take the plunge. It's at http://www.xfree86.org/ Best of luck!
