You may pick up RedHat 5.0 (also available with a book,
although the book is downloadable from the net). I just
installed it (I have dual boot: RedHat/Winblows NT, although
the NT rarely gets booted) with relativlely no snags.
I am a newbie to Linux, but wish I had installed it years ago !

About the only hint I can give you is before you install
make a hardcopy of a list of all the Hardware on your
machine, including the refresh frequencies of your screen,
and its maximum resolution.
RedHat 5.0 autoprobes for Hardware, but it asks you about
these frequencies, as well as the IRQ/DMA/port addresses
of your sound card, your keyboard type, net adapter type,
video card, and a few other things. If you only
have a two button mouse be sure and click OK when it asks
you if you want to be able to emulate a three button
mouse (thus being able to simulate a click of the 3rd
button by clicking both buttons at once)
If you cannot get your mouse to work, try choosing a ps-2
mouse, and specifying the device as /dev/psaux.

If you want to have a dual boot, you can do something like:
1. 1st install NT (I have a minimal NT installation of about 100 meg)
   in a disk partition of about 250 meg) then using NT's disk administrator,
   create an empty partition (unformatted) of at least
   600 meg (thus allowing for a nice size linux swap partition
   of about 50 or 100 meg)
2. Turn off the machine.
2. Insert the linux boot floppy, and restart.

The RedHat 5.0 has a new disk tool called Disk Druid which you
can choose during the install, I am not sure if it available on 4.2.
It is a bit simpler to use than fdisk.
I have my entire Linux file system on a single Linux partition
mounted at /  and a swap partition of about 100 meg.
